Certificate Course In Global Health

The Certificate Course in Global Health is an innovative course that aims to deliver global health learning to future generation of leaders in health. The course utilizes a Global South-South approach where students do not need to fly to the Global North to obtain global health education, but instead, remain in the developing world and learn in their own environment.

This intense and introductory course employs different approaches towards learning and teaching of the concepts, issues and debates with a view to develop critical thinking and leadership among the participants so as to empower them in addressing global health challenges that the world faces. The course emphasizes on the understanding of one’s values and skills important in becoming a good advocate for better health of populations. The curriculum is designed to be multi-faceted and introduces to the participants an integrative approach towards the understanding of the determinants of health encompassing individual to global. Learning and teaching are delivered by a dynamic mix of academics and professionals who are experts and experienced in the field.

Organizational Objective with Course Offering

The course establishes the foundational knowledge on which global health leadership rests. Offered primarily in developing countries to both current and up-and-coming leaders in global health, the course links participants to a growing global network of individuals united in the cause of health for all. Course delivery strategies

This course employs an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach in understanding global health issues. The programme adopts the following methods to facilitate teaching and learning among participants:

  • Team based learning and teaching that reflects the reality in which people work in the global health field.
  • An assessment strategy which encourages participants to develop critical appraisal, analytical and methodological capabilities to address the challenges of global health
  • A range of strategies that encourages self-directed learning and individual ownership and utilization of learning opportunities.

Topics are particularly chosen and designed to cover the important challenges the world faces today. These encompass a wide range of topics and issues from theories to policy and practice and from macro issues that impact at the micro level. They will touch on themes that contribute to the debates in global health such as development, health economics, global politics, human rights, climate, and gender

Certificate Course in Global Health Pharmacy

The Certificate Course in Global Health Pharmacy aims to bring medicines, drugs and pharmaceutical issues to the fore of global health discussions. It introduces concepts and issues in global health, particularly the roles that pharmacy, pharmacists and the pharmaceutical industry play in shaping global health scenario.

The course employs different approaches towards learning and teaching of the concepts, issues and debates with a view to develop critical thinking and leadership among the participants so as to empower them in addressing global health challenges that we face today including critical issues like access to medicines and antimicrobial resistance. Learners include students and early to mid-career health care professionals with an interest on pharmaceutical issues and global health. Themes explored during the courses include global access to medicines, global health logistics, global governance of medicine, global scenario of substandard, counterfeit and adulterated medicines and global health policy on pharmaceuticals.

A general overview of the objectives of the course offering includes:

  • a) To introduce the relationship between global health and pharmaceutical issues particularly the role of medicines and drugs in the dynamics of global health.
  • b) To develop critical thinkers among future leaders and practitioners of public health and global health in the context of medicines and drugs.
  • c) To explore the different tools used in understanding global health inequity in the context of medicines and drugs.
  • d) To provide tools, skills and a good understanding when exploring a career in global health pharmacy.

The duration of the course is 2 – 3 days.
